Metal's Modern Jazz Moment
Corrosion Of Conformity, Die Kreuzen and Prong
Not quite sure what I was trying to get at with this one — Metal’s been art-rock from Day One. Some metal bands were always artsier than others, of course, but Motörhead was the exception, not the rule (and even they evolved out of Hawkwind!) I don’t remember why I had such a hair up my ass about free jazz at this point, either. It is true, though, that there are now some music critics who review nothing but jazz and metal. So maybe I was halfway onto something.
