Macarena Wins 1995
A goddess on a mountaintop burning like a silver flame
Presumably for a really long time, the Minneapolis-St. Paul City Pages arts section asked critics (and maybe normal folks) around the country to write short pieces on whoever they deemed the biggest-deal Artist of the Year. I contributed at least three times, I think — the cast of My So-Called Life (or maybe just Rayanne Graff?) in what must have been 1994; Garth Brooks in I’ll take the wild guess of 1993; and Macarena herself in 1995. Along with being not half as clever as I thought, this column is clearly problematic on multiple levels. Fairly sure I was never invited again — which, if intentional, was perfectly understandable.
