Blondie review, 1981
Nostalgia for new wave began with a Greatest Hits album I never played
College newspaper, senior year. I was just 20 and guess I just liked the exercise of reviewing a best-of collection — especially one I didn’t technically own. In retrospect, given the essentiality of their first four albums, seems like it’d be pretty redundant. As for Autoamerican, I’ve always been fine with a 45 of “Rapture.” Not sure I’ve ever even heard that whole LP. Also not sure what my beef was against Devo the year after they scored with “Whip It.”(Also, Judas Priest had put out a compilation of non-hits that year. Even if, as usual with them, I really had no idea what I was going on about.)
